Homeopathic Remedy: Apis mellifica

Apis mellifica
(Honeybee venom)

If you think about what it feels like to be stung by a bee you have a pretty good idea of the indications of use for this remedy. The symptoms can include, stinging, burning, redness, shortness of breath and swelling. Allergic reactions to the venom can also include swelling that is not visible because it takes place 'inside' of the body, such as in the throat, lungs and kidneys. An example of this kind of severe reaction would be; a dog is stung by a bee and it's face swells, then it's tongue and throat swell which blocks the dog's airway causing sufficoation. This is referred to as anaphylaxis and it is a life threatening condition.

Clinical uses: Itching, hot spots, hive like eruptions, insect bites and stings. It works well in cats for treating Cystitis (bladder infection with scanty painful urination). However, dogs with cystitis seem to respond best to the remedy Canthearis (spanish fly). Kidney failure may also indicate the use of Apis if the symptoms match. Edema (swelling and water retention) may also point to the use of this remedy.

Natural Remedies for Diarrhea

Homeopathic Remedies for Diarrhea

Nux Vomica 200c or 30c could be considered in cases of diarrhea and nausea caused from drug side effects or vaccines, digestive upsets such as a change in diet, overeating or eating garbage. It is also good for pets who do not digest fats well. Here's a homeopathic secret for pet owners (we hope you never need it) who overindulge in drinking beer... Nux Vomica is the #1 hangover remedy for a beer binge.
Podophylum 200c or 30c is a good all round first aid choice in many cases of diarrhea. Symptoms may include stools that containing mucus, have a putrid odor, greenish color, have the characteristic of being hydrant or gushing, the anus may prolapse.
Veratrum Album 200c or 30c for dysentery type diarrhea, with vomiting and dehydration. The pet may be weak and cold. The animal is on the verge of collapse. A key note to this remedy is sudden onset and rapid deterioration. The pet should have veterinary care as soon as possible.
Arsenicum Album 200c or 30c. The animal is restless. Vomiting and diarrhea may take place at the same time. The stool may have a very sickening and foul odor. The color may be black and the consistency very watery. The anus may be inflamed. The animals may show signs of frequent straining, the animal may loose physical strength. An example would be a very weak dog suffering with a parvovirus infection. Arsenicum is the #1 remedy in cases of food poisoning.
Phosphoric acid 30c is often considered if the animal has undigested food in the feces. The diarrhea that resembles this remedy often comes on from fright or anxiety. The case is usually mild and the stool has very little odor.
Phosphorus 200c or 30c When you think of phosphorus think of bleeding and a painful, partially open anus. The feces will be very foul and the animal profoundly weak. The animal may be nervous and demand attention.

Choose the remedy that most closely corresponds to the pet's problem. Do not mix the remedies together. Only give one remedy. One of these remedies will usually do the trick to check an acute case of diarrhea. So, we suggest you add these to your home healthcare kit for your pets. The above homeopathic remedies not only apply to dogs and cats but can be used for you and other pets too; everything from ferrets and birds, to horses and goats.

Herbs to the Rescue for Pets
Slippery elm, will sooth the stomach and intestines. It is a nutritive herb with emollient and slightly astringent qualities. It possesses an abundant mucilage which will soothe irritation, disperse inflammation, draw out impurities, heal rapidly, and greatly strengthen. The powder can be made into a gruel that makes a nutritious food for convalescents; it is easy to assimilate. Its action is so gentle that it can be retained by delicate stomachs when other substances are rejected.

Astragalus is an excellent herb used extensively in Chinese Medicine. It is considered to be a powerful immune-system booster, especially when the digestive system needs help. Chinese medicine says it boosts the Qi of the body. Astragalus can be used for pets who suffer from chronic diarrhea or chronic bacterial intestinal infections. It is also a strong alai if there are problems in the pancreas.

Flower Remedies to the Rescue for Pets
The five following remedies can be used combined to address the emotional aspect. Walnut, Crab apple, olive, star of Bethlehem and Rescue Remedy.

Cat Acupressure Points for Diarrhea

Diarrhea can cause dehydration very quickly, so always consult with your veterinarian. To calm the digestive system and balance the gastrointestinal tract, strengthen the stomach and spleen and relieve frequent, watery stools; for cats, perform point work on LI4, BL20, ST25, ST36, SP6 and SP9.

Dog Acupressure Points for Diarrhea

For dogs, perform acupressure point work on LI4, BL20, ST25, ST36, SP4, SP6, and SP9.

Food Therapies

Urinary Tract Infections

Cystitis and Struvite Crystals in Dogs and Cats

Natural Remedies for Calculi and Uroliths

Dogs and cats who have crystals and casts in small quantities may be considered to be normal. Crystaline or colloidal material coalesces to form a cast of the renal tubules and is flushed out by the urine. However, in large quantities, crystals may form calculi or uroliths and block the tract. A carnivorous diet produces acid urine. An herbivorous diet produces alkaline urine.  The normal pH for dog and cat urine ranges between 5-7. Usually dogs and cats who have calculi problems also have urine that is too alkaline.

Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections of the bladder (referred to as cystitis) play the major role in struvite stone information for two reasons:

Bacterial infections tend to make a dog or cat's urine more alkaline with pH higher than 7.0 which enhances the formation of struvite crystals. This is important in this specific condition as struvite crystals are more apt to remain in solution if the liquid is acidic (with a pH lower than 7.0). That is, they would continue to be dissolved in the liquid and no crystals would form.

If the crystals are formed rapidly and in large quantities, they will unite together to form stones. However, if only small amounts are formed over a longer period of time, they would simply be washed away in the urine without producing any problems.

Water Note:
If you are giving your pet bottled water, check the label. Do NOT give water that has minerals added back after the purification process. This could compound the problem with forming crystals. Look for companies that use a 'reverse osmosis' filtration system or use distilled water.

Diet:
Dogs and cats who have recurring problems should be fed a diet containing 'quality' proteins. If possible, cats should not be free fed or given dry food. A fresh diet of home prepared meals may help to acidify the urine of both dogs and cats.

Homeopathic Remedies for Calculi in Dogs and Cats
Berberis 30c to give relief and promote normal urination. For the older dog or cat whose liver may not function properly and cause gravel. Many lab results confirm that the calculi consist of phosphates. Following diagnosis Calcarea Phosphorica 30c can be dry dosed once weekly for 6-8 weeks. Prevention: Calcarea Phosphorica 30c 1 pill given as a dry dose twice a month may help prevent or reduce occurrence of this condition.

Homeopathic Remedies for Cystitis (bladder infection)
For Cats:
Apis mellifica 200c or 30c. For the warm, thirst-less, restless or listless animal that may act indifferent. Pain, straining and burning at the end of urination. Sarsaparilla 30c can be used if the symptoms are worse at the end of urination: blood or mucous may pass after bladder has emptied. INTENSE pain that causes the cat to cry out in anticipation of urination or at the end of urination.

For Dogs:
Cantharis 200c or 30c. For bladder infections with burning pain before, during and even after urination. Sarsaparilla 30c. Choose this remedy if symptoms are worse at the end of urination, blood or mucous may pass after bladder has emptied. INTENSE pain that causes the dog to cry out in anticipation of urination or at the end of urination.

Nutritional supplements:
Cranberry (extract in capsule form) will help to acidify the urine. It will keep bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall, lessening the chance for infection and struvite crystals to form. NOTE: Do NOT give urinary acidifiers (cranberry extract, vitamin C, Methionine, etc.) when you are using one of the specialty diets that also acidify urine.
Cod Liver Oil is healing to all cells and mucus membranes.
Albaplex made by Standard Process, is a glandular dietary supplement that can help clear the problem by giving direct support to the kidney, liver and urinary tract. It also supports the immune system and is safe to use until all signs of the infection have cleared.

Herbal Remedies:
Nettle can be used as a long term general tonic and to help with painful urination. It can be brewed as a tea and added to a meal or the dried herb can be sprinkled on the pet's food from a capsule.
Parsley has a tonic effect on the kidneys. Add it freshly chopped to a dog or cat's food daily.
Marshmallow Root will relieve painful urination and help in the passage of small stones by coating and soothing the walls of the urinary tract.

Giving Flower Remedies to Birds

DILUTING AND USING FLOWER ESSENCES FOR BIRDS

Flower essences are not homeopathic in their preparation. Flower remedies are somewhat similar to homeopathics because they have a vibrational nature and are dilute. However, unlike homeopathically prepared medicines, their actions have not been determined by provings and they are not potentized. All the plants used in the making of the flower remedies were selected from species that were nontoxic in their natural states. Flower remedies are considered an 'energy' medicine, and their primary action is on the "emotional" sphere of the body.

PREPARING THE REMEDY
Always dilute the remedies before giving them to birds. To combine the remedies put 2 drops of each chosen Flower Remedy into a 1-ounce dropper bottle of spring water. Rescue Remedy is used at double the dose of the other flowers — 4 drops into the dilution bottle. It can be preserved by adding 1 teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar or food grade vegetable glycerin to the dilution. If you don’t add a preservative keep it refrigerated and avoid touching the dropper.

DOSE
For chronic problems give 4 drops, 4 times daily. During emergency first aid, 4 drops can be given every hour to every few minutes.

GIVING THE REMEDY
You can place the drops directly in the bird’s mouth, or on a treat. Another method would be to add the drops to the pet’s food or water bowl or rub it on the cere (upper beak) and feet. For birds that are difficult to handle it can be sprayed on to the upper beak & feet 4 times daily (add 30 drops of your dilution to a spray bottle containing 8 oz. of water).

Flower Remedies, are virtually non-toxic and not habit forming and can be safely used to enhance or compliment any other holistic or conventional veterinary treatment.

Visit our website for all of the healing methods available to pet birds.

Anatomy: The Digestive Process

The Digestive System

Absorption

The primary function of the alimentary tract is to absorb nutrient molecules from digested foods. Once food has been taken in, churned and broken down into tiny bits of organic nutrients by enzymes, it can be absorbed into the body. 90 percent of which is absorbed in the small intestine, which lies between the stomach and large intestine.
The small intestine has three parts: the duodenum, where most digestion occurs, and the jejunum and the ileum, where most absorption takes place.

Digested food, or chyme, moves rapidly through the small intestine while it is being absorbed before it empties into the large intestine at the ileoceal valve. The journey through the large intestine is where water is reabsorbed from the watery chyme left after nutrients have been absorbed in the small intestine. This turns the slushy contents into firmer feces, which are made at the rear end of the large intestine. The feces consist of undigested cellulose fibers from plant-based foods, also known as roughage, and of the bacteria that thrive in the large intestine. These bacteria make up about 30 percent of the dry weight of the feces. Feces in the last part of the intestines - the rectal region - are stored until a convenient moment. During defecation, the sphincter that closes off the anal canal is relaxed under voluntary control, and the feces are voided.

Swine Flu Remedy

Homeopathy to the Rescue
Preventative Remedy for the Swine Flu

At this stage, Arsenicum Album is the people's homeopathic preventative remedy for the Swine Flu. Arsenicum, most closely resembles the majority of the symptoms found in the Swine flu. Although, this information does not apply to pet healthcare we are including it for pet owners so that they can remain healthy to take care of their companion animals.

• 2 pilluels of Arsenicum Album 30c

• 1 clear plastic disposable cup

• 4 ounces of distilled or purified water

Put 4 ounces of pure water in a disposable cup. Put 2 pills of Arsenicum Album 30c into the water that is in the cup. Gently stir the solution.

DOSE: Using a disposable plastic spoon, take 1 teaspoon from the remedy cup orally (hold the liquid in your mouth for as long as it is comfortable before you need to swallow). This should be repeated once weekly until the epidemic is no longer a threat. Using their own spoon, everyone in the family can take a preventative dose from this cup the same time. After dosing, dispose of any left over remedy, also discard the used cup and the spoon(s).

Do not save the left over remedy mixture.

• Each week, make a new remedy cup following the directions above and repeat the dosing procedure. Continue the preventive protocol of taking the remedy once weekly until the epidemic threat is over. Then take one dose a month through the rest of the flu season.

• Do not save the left over remedy mixture.

Note: To avoid negating (causing it not to work) a homeopathic remedy, you should not touch it with your hands. Use a plastic disposable spoon or the cap of the container to dispense the pills. If you accidently touch or drop one just throw it away and dispense a new one. It is best to take homeopathic remedies into a neutral mouth. This means that before or after taking a remedy your mouth should be free of food or drink (especially coffee) for 20 to 30 minutes. You should avoid smoking or brushing your teeth right before or after taking a remedy too.

Homeopathic remedies come in many forms. Hylands brand, makes a soft dissolve tablet. Boiron's brand, (shown in picture) comes as hard pillules that are slow to dissolve. If the brand you are using is hard and slow to dissolve, put the pills in a small folded piece of white paper and crush the remedy on a hard surface with a flat kitchen knife. Then sprinkle the powdered remedy into the water cup.
